Data Loading
Data loading is the initial step should be done at the earliest part of the project. Raw data is loaded into the software PETREL. The SEGY format, a binary format that can be easily be imported into Petrel is the standard format for 2D and 3D seismic data. A link is created between the seismic data and the Petrel project that we are going to work on. This indicates that the SEGY data is not directly copied into the project. There is another format of data that can be imported which is known as ZGY format. It is in a bricked format. This format can be obtain by realizing the SEGY data.
Firstly, to load the data in Petrel, we click on “New Project” for a new project and next we click on “Import Data” at the Menu Bar to import our seismic data. If we want to open an existing project we have to click on “Open Project”. Later, we must select and check the necessary information regarding our data. The data given to us to be interpreted is not known of its location as it is private and confidential.

To make sure our data is organized, we put them into specific folders. There are different types of folders such as predefined and regular folders. Majority of the data are normally imported into the regular folders but certain specific data is imported into the predefined folders. We can get all this folders from the “Insert menu”, select the folders wanted to be added to the project. We can rename the folders if we want in the Settings (right-click on folder, enter Settings, change the name in “Info Tab”).

2. Data Realization

Realization is the process of creating a physical copy of seismic data in the ZGY bricked seismic format. The original volume can be an imported SEG-Y file, virtual seismic data. Realization serves these important purpose:
-
Creates a physical representation of virtual seismic data
-
Changes value resolution
-
Changes the data format to ZGY bricked format
-
Increases memory-loading speed
